In recent years, we have seen Apple making announcements through press releases for products with incremental updates. As per fresh reports, the Cupertino brand could go the latter way to launch new iPad Air, iPad Pro, and MacBook Air this week. It would be a quick and efficient way to roll out the said products without the cost and distractions associated with a large-scale event.

Mark Gurman from Bloomberg claims Apple isn’t planning to host a flashy choreographed event for launching new iPad Air, iPad Pro, and MacBook Air. Instead, it could send out press releases and posts through the Apple Newsroom website. He says the company could publish a “series of online videos and marketing campaigns” for the products.

While he believes the announcement could take place sometime this month or April, MacRumors says it could happen as early as this week. The publication isn’t exactly sure if it would be the aforesaid products though.

So either in March or April, the following product announcements are expected:

• 2 iPad Pro: These Apple tablets could come with Apple M3 silicon, slim body, OLED screens, a front camera on the wider side, a rehauled rear camera design and perhaps even MagSafe charging support. The iPad Pro could also get a new Magic Keyboard with a bigger trackpad and the body could be partially aluminium. Apple could even release a new Apple Pencil for these or the Air models mentioned below.
• 2 iPad Air: These could be powered by Apple M2 SoC. One of the models could have a 12.9-inch screen. 

• MacBook Air 13″, 15″: The MacBook Air 13-inch and 15-inch models could be refreshed with an M3 chip, Bluetooth 5.3 and Wi-Fi 6E.
• New colour options for iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone cases and Apple Watch bands are also being rumoured. MacRumors doesn’t have much confidence in this rumour though.

• There’s a camera at the back of the laptop, likely used for AI object recognition to identify items placed behind the device.

• Lenovo claims that Artificial Intelligence Generated Content (AIGC) enables interaction with physical objects and overlaying digital information to create unique user generated content. 
  
• Users can also switch between the keyboard and drawing board with a supported pen. 
  
• To display videos and dynamic images, the transparent screen blends and harmonises with its surroundings, as per Lenovo.

Is a transparent laptop practical?

Let’s face it, who hasn’t imagined working on a transparent system? We have all seen such technology being used in sci-fi movies, and Lenovo’s transparent laptop is a step in that direction. But as with all new developments, this model has its own challenges. One of the first major challenges would be the fragility of the device. As a famous YouTuber often says, “Glass is glass, and glass breaks,”  the device is bound to be delicate.

Add to that, with no tactile feedback, the typing experience on the glass is likely to be extremely jarring, which would be a shame unless Lenovo implements an effective haptic feedback system that smartphones adopt. There are also questions about the actual visibility of the display. All in all, while the concept is promising, the product requires refinement before it is ready for real-world use. Nonetheless, it is an exciting prospect.

Apple is rumoured to introduce new generation A18 and M4 chipsets for its forthcoming iPhones and Mac models. These are said to feature an upgraded Neural Engine with “significantly” more cores, based on a report from the Taiwanese publication Economic Daily News. The new chipsets should find their way to products later this year.

• The upgraded Neural Engine means the performance of AI/machine learning tasks will be vastly improved, as per the report.
• This falls in line with iOS 18 embracing new generative AI features for Siri, shortcuts, Messages, Apple Music and more. 
• Apple CEO, Tim Cook hinted the brand is working on generative AI features and would share details “later this year.” 
• iOS 18 is expected to be announced at the WWDC 2025 conference in June.

The A18 series chipset is expected to debut in iPhone 16 models in September. Earlier rumours suggested that some generative AI features could be exclusive to iPhone 16 models and the upgraded Neural Engine could be the reason.
