This year’s Mobile World Congress aka MWC 2024 in Barcelona has concluded. The annual tech trade fair saw multiple product announcements and showcases from top brands. OEMs like Xiaomi and HONOR brought their A-game to compete with big-league flagships, while Samsung showcased its latest innovation in the wearable segment. There was some futuristic tech on display as well from the likes of Motorola. Here is a list of the top announcements we witnessed at MWC 2024.

Xiaomi 14 series global launch

Xiaomi launched its latest flagship, the Xiaomi 14 series, globally. The series includes Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Ultra for global markets. Powered with Leica co-engineered camera systems, the latest devices feature Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset and Xiaomi’s brand new Android 14-based HyperOS skin. The Xiaomi 14 starts at EUR 999, while the top-end Xiaomi 14 Ultra costs EUR 1,499. The vanilla Xiaomi 14 is set to launch in India on March 7th.

OnePlus Watch 2

OnePlus Watch 2 is the brand’s second attempt at a smartwatch. It comes with big upgrades, including a dual-engine architecture powered by two different processors, Snapdragon W5 for Wear OS and BES2700 for RTOS. Thanks to this, the smartwatch features a whopping 100-hour claimed battery life. The smartwatch will be sold in India starting March 4th at Rs 24,999.

Samsung Galaxy Ring

Samsung teased its entrance into a new category of wearables during the Galaxy S24 series launch in January. The Samsung Galaxy Ring was showcased in person at MWC 2024 for the first time, and the brand revealed some new details, such as the materials and sizes of the upcoming smart ring. It is expected to launch in July at the second Galaxy Unpacked event alongside the upcoming Galaxy Z series foldable.

HONOR Magic6 Pro

The HONOR Magic6 Pro is the brand’s latest flagship for the European market. It features a 180MP 2.5X periscope camera, which is a first for a smartphone. Powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, the device features Android 14-based MagicOS 8.0 software with a big focus on AI functionalities. Other features include a 50MP front camera with a 3D depth sensor and a silicone-carbon-based 5,600mAh battery. The device costs EUR 1,299.

Nothing Phone (2a) design reveal

Nothing’s third smartphone was showcased at an event in Barcelona last week. The Nothing Phone (2a) is the London-based brand’s entry into the lower mid-range segment. Touted as a “clear upgrade” over the Nothing Phone (1) while being cheaper than the Phone (2), the device will take on the likes of Redmi Note 13 and Realme 12 Pro series in India. It will feature a MediaTek Dimensity 7200 Pro chipset and is expected to come with 50MP dual cameras on the back. The phone is set to launch on March 5th at an event in New Delhi, India.

Lenovo ThinkBook Transparent Display laptop

Lenovo showed off a pretty incredible concept laptop with a transparent microLED panel at MWC 2024. The Lenovo ThinkBook Transparent Display laptop has a 17.3-inch see-through screen and a camera at the back, which enables AI features. A final product is not expected to make its way to the markets anytime soon, but the innovation did catch our eyes at the trade fair.

Motorola Bendable Phone

Another concept showcased at MWC 2024 was the Motorola bendable display smartphone. The phone takes flexibility to the next level, with the brand showcasing its ability to be worn even on the user’s wrists. It looks clunky but is much better than the first version showcased way back in 2016. Samsung Display also showcased a similar concept, which could mean that smartphone brands are considering introducing this category at some point in the future.

Tecno Camon 30 series

Tecno gave us a first look at its upcoming Tecno Camon 30 series, which includes four models in the lineup. The standout from this series is the Camon 30 Premier, which has a fresh design, MediaTek Dimensity 8200 Ultra chipset, 50MP primary camera, and 70W fast charging support. The device is expected to be available in the year’s second quarter and could enter the Indian market.

If you ask me my favourite handheld portable gaming machine I would say PS Vita in a heartbeat. The console was underpowered for sure, but it launched with an OLED display, had a very good library of games and was super ergonomic to use. While we have devices like the Steam Deck, ROG Ally (review), Legion Go and more available today, my go-to portable console is the Nintendo Switch for its exclusive library and lighter-weight design when compared to its peers. Sure, it isn’t as powerful as the Windows-powered handhelds (and Steam Deck) but it has been the primary reason for the revival of the handheld gaming market.

At MWC 2024, Tecno showed me a unique take on the handheld gaming space. They shoved ROG Ally-like hardware in an Xbox controller-like form factor and put the display on your face. The Tecno Pocket Go and AR Pocket Vision run on a battery which is user-swappable and while I didn’t see the UI, I did play Cyberpunk 2077 for 30 minutes. I didn’t want to leave.

Specs at a glance

The Tecno Pocket Go runs on an AMD Ryzen 7 8840HS (35W, 8-cores, 16-threads, up to 5.1GHz) and an AMD Radeon 780M (12 x RDNA 3 compute units). It has 16GB LPDDR5 RAM and 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD. It has a 50Wh user-replaceable battery. In terms of connectivity, it has a USB-C port for charging and a headphone jack.

The AR Pocket Vision has a 0.71-inch micro-OLED screen with a 2K resolution but gives you the experience of gaming on a 215-inch screen sitting a few feet away! So the angle of the display wasn’t the best for me, but I could have on the AR glasses without using my spectacles.

Hands-on with the Tecno Pocket Go and AR Pocket Vision

One of my biggest problems with the PSVR2 headset (review) is that it gets uncomfortable with prolonged use mostly because of my glasses. In the case of the AR Pocket Vision, there are individual dials for each eye to adjust the focus. So even though both my eyes have a different number, I could adjust the experience for a crystal clear experience.

All the hardware is inside the controller making it slightly bulky but not uncomfortable. It has an asymmetric design like the Xbox controller with a little RGB thrown into the mix. For the time I played Cyberpunk, the controls felt responsive with no input lag. There is vibration too for the added immersion and if you used an Xbox controller in the past, you will feel right at home. Maybe the final version of the system can implement some form of adaptive triggers found on the PS5 Dualsense controller.

Moving over to the AR headset they are super sharp and clear. Like I said before, the angle of viewing could have been slightly better for me as I felt the bottom of the visual area was getting a little cut but this isn’t the final unit. The glasses have an OLED display, but they don’t support HDR.

Closing thoughts

While handheld consoles today come with LCD and OLED display technology, it is fascinating to see Tecno go in a different direction with AR glasses for the display. It isn’t the first AR/VR headset to do so, and we have experienced something similar from Lenovo recently during the Lenovo Techworld India, but in that case, the glasses were connected to the Legion Go. Here, the unique thing is that the handheld Tecno Pocket Go does not have a built-in display. While we are still waiting to see the UI, battery life and most importantly price of the Pocket Go it is definitely one gamers need to keep an eye on.

MWC 2024: MediaTek shows off on-device AI image generator that works as fast as you type https://www.91mobiles.com/hub/mediatek-dimensity-9300-soc-ai-image-generator-mwc-2024/ Thu, 29 Feb 2024 08:50:08 +0000 https://www.91mobiles.com/hub/?p=570786 MediaTek showcases the future of text-based AI image generators, operating at the speed of your typing.

The post MWC 2024: MediaTek shows off on-device AI image generator that works as fast as you type first appeared on 91mobiles.com.

]]>

The next generation of AI-backed text-to-image generators has arrived, with MediaTek leading the charge. At the ongoing Mobile World Congress (MWC 2024) in Barcelona, Spain, the Taiwan-based semiconductor company showcased an on-device AI image generator capable of generating pictures as fast as you type. The technology was showcased on a prototype smartphone featuring MediaTek’s flagship 4nm-based Dimensity 9300 SoC. The company hopes its future-generation chipsets will enable similar AI capabilities, making the technology available to the masses.

How does MediaTek’s on-device AI image generator work?

If you’re familiar with popular text-to-image generators, the functioning is more or less the same. Tools, including Microsoft Copilot (formerly Bing AI), Mindjourney, Dall-E and Adobe Firefly, let users create elaborate images based on simple text inputs. The images are as good as your instructions, and the generating process generally takes up to a minute or two. Also, there’s no way of knowing how the AI image generator reads inputs until the final output arrives.

On the other hand, MediaTek demonstrated a real-time image generation process. It means you can observe the tool’s output as you type. For example, typing “Spider-Man” immediately prompts the tool to generate corresponding images, giving you a preview of the direction. Furthermore, the final output is generated instantly upon completion of typing.

In other words, you can instantly see whether the tool understands the prompt, whether it’s a person, a place or an object.

How is MediaTek achieving this?

As mentioned, MediaTek showcased the technology on a Dimensity 9300 SoC-powered prototype device. This particular chipset utilises a new Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) architecture to incorporate an upgraded generative AI engine for faster and more reliable processing.

mediatek

MediaTek is also leveraging Stable Diffusion XL Turbo text-to-image generator open source to let users create images through a vast catalogue. The company claims that this is the first implementation of the Stable Diffusion XL Turbo on a mobile device.

What does the future look like?

During our test, the MediaTek Dimensity 9300 SoC-powered smartphone generated images with simple text inputs within seconds. The results were equally impressive.

I also tested the tool with text inputs specific to India, and the results were exceptional. Of course, some results were not 100 per cent accurate, but mind you, this was on a prototype device. That means, the future looks brighter and promising, at least for dynamic image generators.

There’s still some time till smartphone OEMs fully leverage Dimensity 9300 SoC’s improved APU to unlock native AI capabilities. The Vivo X100 is the only smartphone in India to feature this Dimensity chipset. However, the smartphone is yet to offer a native text-to-image generator.

Nothing Phone (2a) first impressions: a budget-friendly innovation https://www.91mobiles.com/hub/nothing-phone-2a-first-impressions/ Wed, 28 Feb 2024 04:30:26 +0000 https://www.91mobiles.com/hub/?p=570334 Here are our first impressions of Nothing's upcoming smartphone - Phone (2a).

The post Nothing Phone (2a) first impressions: a budget-friendly innovation first appeared on 91mobiles.com.

]]>

Ahead of the Nothing Phone (2a) India launch event on March 5th, the handset was showcased globally at MWC 2024 in Barcelona, Spain. The upcoming Nothing smartphone is believed to be a toned-down version of the regular Phone 2 (review) that will appeal to budget buyers. The handset will tout the glyph interface underneath the transparent back. Additionally, the handset will boast a new chipset, a flat-edged design, and two distinct camera rings positioned at the centre of the rear panel. Having spent some time with the device, we’re eager to share our Nothing Phone (2a) first impressions.

Design

Although inspired by its elder sibling, the design of the Nothing Phone (2a) looks distinct and unique. Part of this distinction is due to the dual rear cameras, which are positioned horizontally and reminiscent of futuristic robots from Pixar movies. There is a hump around the cameras, but it seamlessly blends into the glossy transparent glass on the back panel. The transparent glass reveals a more simplified glyph interface in comparison to the Phone 2, with three LED lights only around the camera modules. Unlike the previous Nothing phones, there are no LED lights at the bottom half of the Phone (2a). Instead, it sports a pattern reminiscent of a ribbon connector. Additionally, the handset lacks wireless charging, which makes sense if the brand is going for an affordable price tag.

The smartphone flaunts flat edges with a matte finish, offering a comfortable good grip on the device. The volume buttons are on the right spine of the phone, while the left edge sports a power button. As for I/O, the handset features a Type-C port for charging and data transfer at the bottom edge along with a speaker grille and SIM ejector tray.

Colour variants

Similar to Nothing Phone 1 and 2, the Phone (2a) comes in two colour variants: Black and White.

Glyph Interface

The Glyph Interface on the Nothing Phone (2a) is assisted by a couple of LED modules placed in circular arcs and a straight module placed vertically on the right-hand side of the back panel. The interface offers pretty much the same functionality as the Nothing Phone 2. They light up for calls and notifications, timers, progress indicators, and more.

Performance

Performance on the Nothing Phone (2a) has been taken care of by the MediaTek Dimensity 7200 Pro SoC. This is a slightly customised version of the Dimensity 7200 and is paired with 12GB of RAM and an additional 8GB of virtual RAM. The company claims the chipset offers better performance than its counterpart Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 and Snapdragon 782G SoCs. This will be thoroughly tested in our full review, so stay tuned to 91mobiles.

No bloatware

Unlike other smartphones within the segment, the Nothing Phone (2a)’s software is said to be relatively clean. Nothing has claimed there will be no third-party apps pre-installed on the smartphone.

Motorola bendable concept phone first impressions: a phone that doubles as a bracelet https://www.91mobiles.com/hub/motorola-bendable-concept-phone-first-impressions/ Wed, 28 Feb 2024 04:14:18 +0000 https://www.91mobiles.com/hub/?p=570523 The new Motorola bending concept phone will truly bend your mind.

The post Motorola bendable concept phone first impressions: a phone that doubles as a bracelet first appeared on 91mobiles.com.

]]>

If you thought folding smartphones were the next big thing, think again. We now have a fully functional smartphone in town that can bend without a crack! A bendable smartphone was showcased by Motorola at the ongoing Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. When laid flat, the Motorola smartphone or one could call it Motorola bendy, appears to be like any other device you’ve seen in the market. It offers a relatively taller 6.9-inch display with full-HD+ resolution. But once bent, the smartphone can even double as a bracelet or watch on your wrist, giving you the best of both worlds… kind of.

Design

The Motorola bendy is a slightly more polished version of the concept first showcased in 2016. The new iteration is slightly wider with a better in-hand feeling. The display technology has also been refined. Motorola says it continues to leverage an “adaptive display” technology but with a better viewing experience.

Motorola Bendable

The back features an orange fabric, which may resemble the Apple Watch Ultra strap. However, the fabric feels airy and is smoother on your skin in the cuff mode. The new iteration can also do a couple of more poses, letting users have some extra use cases. For instance, cuff mode lets you use the phone as a smartwatch, but only offers time for now. The tend mode can be useful for taking selfies or video calls. And of course, the flat mode will give you a full-blown regular smartphone experience.

Display

The Motorola bendy continues using a flexible display, but this time by utilising an OLED panel. The technology is not entirely new. ASUS also has Zenbook Flex, which features a 17-inch bendable OLED display.

Motorola Bendable

Another good thing is that there aren’t any awkward noises while bending the phone, which may put potential users at ease. Motorola spent a reasonable time explaining an AI feature to change the wallpaper aesthetics. You can even create wallpapers based on the outfits you’re wearing, which is pretty cool.

Motorola Bendable

Once the Motorola bendy is bent, the phone offers a “compact form of full Android” on a 4.6-inch display. You can’t run a host of apps as of now. But the small viewing area is good enough to let you see time through a neat watch widget or scroll through notifications.

Overview

Since it’s a concept, the likelihood of Motorola bendy becoming mainstream or commercially available is very low, at least for the next two years or so. The price of the phone remains unknown. But it won’t be cheap if we go by past Motorola foldable phones with cutting-edge display technology.

Meanwhile, if you’re not convinced by moldable displays, you want to check out Lenovo’s concept laptop with a transparent screen.

Lenovo ThinkBook Transparent Display laptop first impressions: straight out of a sci-fi movie https://www.91mobiles.com/hub/lenovo-thinkbook-transparent-display-laptop-first-impressions/ Tue, 27 Feb 2024 14:36:46 +0000 https://www.91mobiles.com/hub/?p=570487 Take a look at the display of the future! We go hands-on with Lenovo's ThinkBook Transparent Display concept laptop.

The post Lenovo ThinkBook Transparent Display laptop first impressions: straight out of a sci-fi movie first appeared on 91mobiles.com.

]]>

We have seen laptops with dual and even bendable displays. But fully functioning transparent screens? No, not so much! At the ongoing Mobile World Congress (MWC 2024) in Barcelona, Spain, Lenovo showcased a concept laptop with a large 17-inch transparent display, utilising a transparent microLED panel.

Here are my early impressions of this Lenovo laptop with a large transparent screen.

Design

While my interaction with the laptop, which Lenovo calls the Lenovo ThinkBook Transparent Display laptop, was limited, there are several noticeable aspects.

Lenovo ThinkBook Transparent Display laptop

For instance, this concept laptop looks heavy. You may not be able to figure that out by looking at the borderless, see-through screen, but the deck is bulky. An estimate would be around 3-4 kg, which is not at all portable by today’s standards.

Additionally, there’s no physical keyboard. A simple gesture activates the keyboard on the wide canvas. You have the option to customise both the colours and functions of the keys. Moreover, you can draw directly on the deck, and input lag is minimal. The feedback of the non-physical keys is okay, if not the best.

Lenovo ThinkBook Transparent Display laptop

There’s also a tiny camera on the back of the Lenovo ThinkBook Transparent Display laptop. Lenovo claims that the camera can unlock AI features without providing substantial details. I anticipate the camera may facilitate object recognition potentially in both 2D and 3D formats. The transparent display could also assist designers (such as architects and 3D artists) in refining products behind the laptop and in front of the camera. Additionally, stylus support on the screen and keyboard deck adds versatility to the device.

Display

As mentioned, the Lenovo ThinkBook Transparent Display laptop features a 17-inch (17.3-inch) transparent microLED display. Why micro-LED? That’s because the technology offers “optimisation of image quality, durability and adjustable transmittance to provide more privacy or more transparency to interact with real-world objects.”

Lenovo ThinkBook Transparent Display laptop

The resolution is said to be HD (720p) for now, but that can improve with the future generations. The display offers up to 1,000 nits brightness, which again is decent if we look at the standards. In my very limited time with the device, the visibility of the text and other content wasn’t an issue in a controlled environment at the MWC 2024 booth.

Now, the early impression of the display is nothing short of amazing. The screen looks straight out of a sci-fi movie or Tony Stark’s office. For our demo, Lenovo showcased applications such as Paint, Word, and even YouTube. There could be a limitation with the number of colours (HD resolution).

What amazed me was that the ThinkBook Transparent Display laptop’s display did not show any signs of flickering, which has been a problem with transparent displays of the past. The applications, although limited, ran without stutters and lags. And visibility was on point despite its being projected on a see-through glass.

Lenovo ThinkBook Transparent Display laptop

Yes, it also means people in the background can see what you’re doing, but there could be neat solutions to mitigate this in future.

Overview

The Lenovo ThinkBook Transparent Display laptop is a concept, which means the commercial unit may take years to come out. It also means that the final product can be totally different from what we see now. It implies the laptop can be thinner, and the display might offer better resolution.

The useability, at least at this point, may look limited, I don’t see why people won’t like transparent displays. After all, we all low-key enjoy those cool transparent screens in movies, like Avengers or Minority Report. How far are we from getting an actual unit with a transparent display? Only time will tell!

  • Lenovo has unveiled a concept laptop with a transparent display at MWC 2024.
  • The Transparent ThinkBook features a 17.3-inch MicroLED display.
  • The transparent panel blends with the environment to display images and videos.

Lenovo has introduced a new ThinkBook at the MWC this year, which features a transparent display. The device is still a proof of concept, and quite far from being released as a commercial product anytime soon. The ThinkBook comes with a 17.3-inch MicroLED borderless display and a transparent keyboard. Let us take a detailed look at the device and its functionalities.

Lenovo’s transparent laptop

  • The laptop features a 17.3-inch MicroLED borderless display and a transparent keyboard area as well.
  • The display comes with up to 55 percent transparency and turns opaque when pixels turn on. The 1,000 nits brightness lend the panel sufficient brightness both indoors and outdoors.
  • There’s a camera at the back of the laptop, likely used for AI object recognition to identify items placed behind the device.
  • Lenovo claims that Artificial Intelligence Generated Content (AIGC) enables interaction with physical objects and overlaying digital information to create unique user generated content.
  • Users can also switch between the keyboard and drawing board with a supported pen.
  • To display videos and dynamic images, the transparent screen blends and harmonises with its surroundings, as per Lenovo.
  • The brand has not revealed anything related to the hardware specifications of this machine.

Is a transparent laptop practical?

Let’s face it, who hasn’t imagined working on a transparent system? We have all seen such technology being used in sci-fi movies, and Lenovo’s transparent laptop is a step in that direction. But as with all new developments, this model has its own challenges. One of the first major challenges would be the fragility of the device. As a famous YouTuber often says, “Glass is glass, and glass breaks,”  the device is bound to be delicate.

Add to that, with no tactile feedback, the typing experience on the glass is likely to be extremely jarring, which would be a shame unless Lenovo implements an effective haptic feedback system that smartphones adopt. There are also questions about the actual visibility of the display. All in all, while the concept is promising, the product requires refinement before it is ready for real-world use. Nonetheless, it is an exciting prospect.

  • Deutsche Telekom has introduced a new AI smartphone.
  • It’s a concept phone without an app interface, and relies only on AI.
  • So you’ll have the AI performing tasks that you normally would require apps for.

AI is one area smartphone brands are focusing on, and it’s not limited only to Google anymore. Samsung, OPPO, OnePlus and more brands are incorporating AI into their smartphones. Not just smartphone OEMs but tech companies like Meta is also going to make it easier to edit photos and videos. Deutsche Telekom has now given us a sneak peek towards what AI in smartphones could look like in future.

AI smartphone with an app-free interface

  • At the ongoing Mobile World Congress 2024, Deutsche Telekom introduced a concept smartphone that has an app-free interface. It has been developed by Deutsche Telekom in collaboration with Qualcomm and Brain.AI.
  • This concept phone relies completely on AI so there’s no app installed on the device, according to a report by Android Authority.
  • So instead of any app on the smartphone, users will rely on an AI assistant to use the device. It isn’t clear how exactly this would be possible since there might be several limitations for the AI.
  • Some examples of how the AI smartphone would work include giving prompts to the AI, and getting suggestions or recommendations for travel, food and products to buy. Another example is taking a picture and asking AI to send it to your contacts.
  • The AI smartphone will be able to perform tasks and functions that would normally require two or three apps to complete it.
  • Using AI, it takes over the functions of a wide range of apps and can carry out all daily tasks that would normally require several applications on the device.

According to the company CEO Tim Hoettges, the company sees an app-free smartphone in the future. “I can tell you that in 5-10 years from now, nobody from us will use apps anymore,” Hoettges said.

This is only a concept for now, and there’s no word on when the AI smartphone will be commercially launched or if it ever will. But it’s not impossible to think of a future like this for smartphones seeing how AI really is taking over more complex tasks.
